The Collection: The Four Gentleman, Barware Design Concept: The Plum Blossom has been depicted and delineated on since the Song Dynasty. It belongs to a recurring motif in Chinese art and literature known as the “Four Gentlemen,” in which a titular flower or plant represents a season out of the year. Sculpted into exquisite low relief here in one of LIULI’s many takes on the subject, the plum blossom is complemented by winding branches, a heartfelt pair of birds, and a rough-yet-natural grainy texture. The flower represents its season perfectly in that it is known to bloom brilliantly in the harshest and most unforgiving of conditions. This art piece comes from the series “The Four Gentlemen, Crystal Bowl.” And celebrating beauty and resilience amidst adversity, the plum blossom is the gentleman who reminds us to be strong. |
