Design Concept:

"Tea: A Mirror of Soul" is a 2002 Chinese-language, Western-style opera by Tan Dun, inspired by The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu. Premiered in Tokyo, it tells a poetic love story between Seikyo, a Japanese prince, and Lan, a Tang Dynasty princess, exploring themes of ritual, choice, and enlightenment.

LIULI’s handcrafted crystal tea sets were featured in the production, bridging ancient tea culture with modern performance. The “Scoop of Moon” vessel, with its gold-plated interior and ruyi-shaped scoop, embodies harmony and quiet reflection—echoing the opera’s meditative tone.

Visual symbols such as the bǎndèng lóng (板凳龍)—a dragon made of moving benches—paid tribute to folk art while transforming it into abstract metaphor. Like the fish gliding through clear water, these elements speak to spiritual clarity, inner peace, and the timeless pursuit of truth.
