Teak, ebony, and ebonized wood back-hinged flat top rectangular chest on a stand in the Dutch colonial style from Sri Lank (Ceylon), ca 1850.

The ebony and ebonized wood banded form with pierced and cast brass escutcheon, bale pulls, and studs and on conforming stand with three short drawers. The drawer faces inlaid with cartouches in ebony stringing surrounding inlaid double flowerheads in a circle, all above a pierced apron inlaid with elaborate flower urn and arrangement trailing to foliate tendrils and blossoms. The entirety on double-waisted tapering baluster feet.

The main lock still works and the key (large) is included.

Construction: Pegged and joined. Moldings pinned, drawers dovetailed, tenons. Four drawers, one interior.

This was acquired by the late legendary interior designer Lucia Lawrence from a top Hong Kong Antique dealer for her own display collection. Directly imported from Hong Kong in the 1980s.

Condition: Excellent. Chip in one foot, and one crack on the backside, expertly repaired by us.
